Why is My Car’s A/C not Blowing Cold?

Driving around and realizing your AC is not blowing cold can be so frustrating, especially in the northern California heat. When your AC stops blowing cold, it's usually a sign there something is interrupting the cooling cycle, restricting airflow, or causing a system failure.

Here are four common reasons why your car is AC could be not blowing cold.

  1. Low Refrigerant levels (A Leak)

The AC system is a closed loop system meaning it doesn't use up refrigerant overtime. If the system is low, this indicates that there is a leak somewhere. Most common areas of leaks are found and worn. O-ring seals cracked condensers and even failing AC compressors. Low refrigerant means the system can't absorb and release heat properly.

  2. A Failing Compressor or Clutch

Think of your compressor as the heart of the AC system. It creates pressure inside the system, allowing for refrigerant to flow properly cooling the evaporator. When the compressor fails internally or the clutch is unable to engage, the refrigerant stops, moving and your vents will blow warm air.

  3. A Clogged cabin, Air Filter or Condenser

Sometimes the issue isn't refrigerant related at all, but could be from lack of airflow. If the fence on the AC condenser are bent or the cabin air filter is clogged up, this can prevent proper airflow and cooling.

  4. Electrical or Wiring Issues

Most modern vehicles are equipped with fuses, relays, and pressure sensors that are responsible for engaging the AC compressor, or the climate control system. Refuses burnt, or a relay is shorted out, this can keep the AC system from you and turning on thus leading to warm air in your car.
